When I was pregnant with my son I couldn't help but be thankful that I was having a boy. Believe me, I know how that sounds, but I honestly had no clue how I would bring up a little girl to have a healthy self image in this misguided, lustful world.
Today, the pressure to be perfect is shoved in the faces of the female population everywhere we look. It's a constant competition to be the best…an evil omnipresent voice telling us "No matter how good you look its never gonna be good enough. If you don't try harder there's always gonna be someone more beautiful!" What right does this voice have? This is what Satan wants us to believe. Our society uses women as bait to sell or advertise their products, watch their movies or television shows, and read their magazines. We have literally become obsessed with ourselves. Our lust for perfection has made it so that natural beauty is hard to find anymore. The message sent out is that we have to fake our beauty because we just weren't made well enough. That's what gets me¦Didn't a perfect God make each of us exactly the way he wanted us? Who are we to change and try to exceed what He created? We go as far as attaching someone else's hair to our own to pretend its longer and thicker than it really is. We tan at salons to artificially alter the color of our skin, apply fake eyelashes to make ours longer, apply fake nails, wear padded bras, and even purchase colored contacts to make our eyes a different color. We spend ridiculous amounts of money at beauty salons bleaching our hair to unnatural shades of blonde or colors that match their favorite celebrity. Women waste precious time putting on gallons of makeup and trying to fake a flawless complexion. We even go as far as tattooing permanent makeup on our faces or paying someone to cut us open to have man made boobs implanted into our bodies. (which will eventually burst and need replaced.) How ridiculous is a boob replacement?! We are on a mission to be tightened, toned, lifted, and reshaped into man's vision of idealism. So it seems, all we need to be gorgeous is the money to maintain it, right? But, Matthew 6:24 states "you cannot serve both God and money." We don't even realize that we're sinning.
Even worse, though, is after all of the faking it, its still not enough! So we have Photoshop experts and professional lighting to make up for anything we missed. On television and magazines women can be airbrushed until they are barely recognizable, if need be. Body parts can be made to look smaller, darker, toned, smoother, bigger, "better". All of that is custom designed, man made fantasy, but try telling that to a little girl who cant stand to look at herself in the mirror. We have become tainted into thinking that people actually look like this. We think it must be attainable. And so the seed is planted. Why should we allow ourselves to be manipulated and distracted by our society when it doesn't even hold any value? Even "good Christians" are making this crucial mistake. (not excluding myself) Growing old is inevitable. It's a waste of time and energy trying to change that. At the end of our lives on earth, we leave our bodies behind. They are merely transportation for our true selves, and they are not needed where were going. The energy wasted on looking "perfect" here in our short lives would be better applied towards building a "perfect" relationship with the One who controls where we spend eternity. Strip off everything artificial and we are uniquely and externally "perfect" the way God created us. More importantly, we each need to ask ourselves this question: How does my soul measure up?
